FOOD REVIEW: Barley & Buns, Spice Market

It seems steamed buns are having a moment in London right now and riding the wave is Spice Market with their newly launched ‘Barley & Buns’ pop-up, running through till Christmas.

The menu includes six bespoke Taiwanese Gua Bao-style buns and a small selection of sides. We couldn’t resist the Crispy Soft Shell Crab, Soy Glazed Short Rib (the clear winner) and the Crispy Korean Chicken buns – all heartily filled and pillowy-soft. Teamed with a bowl full of Edamame and Spicy Thai Slaw, we settled in and got well acquainted, stuffing ourselves as full as a gua bao.

Also on the menu is a selection of barley cocktails, specially chosen to complement the buns. We couldn’t resist the Spiced Negroni made with Campari, gin, Peroni, Elemakule bitters and the Grapefruit Cooler, a sharp concoction of tequila, fresh grapefruit, agave, Schieballion and grapefruit bitters. We finished things off with a bag of cookies and ice cream boxes – truly novelty desserts but a good way to end (their ginger ice cream went down a storm).

If you’re not yet on the bun-wagon (sorry) and are needing an introduction to steamed buns, then get yourself down to Spice Market pronto. This is one food craze that isn’t going anywhere.
